WHO ARE UNICORN PRODUCTIONS LA?

Hello! We are Sky and Olya and we are Unicorn Productions LA.

We love shooting and shoot a plethora of varied work and we strive to create naturalistic cinematic magic in any genre that we are commissioned to shoot.

In 2014, we embarked on our first professional photojournalism assignment to the country of Montserrat - which is a British Overseas Country. We spent 8 weeks shooting every single day in natural light and on locations; we simultaneously covered a political campaign and shot people both lifestyle and candid - whilst shooting events for the British Embassy and PDM political party.In the evenings, we spent several hours learning to edit and color grade (using film making color grading techniques).

This is why many of clients - in particular in the Entertainment Industry (agents & actors) love their final edits because they feel and look as if they had been shot on a tv or film set.

Many of our first images were taken on location and with natural light. We didn't know it at the time, but this helped define "our style" We love to shoot stories and also relish the fact that clients from many different genres ask us to shoot for their brand.

One of our most recent and interesting developments is our Medical Imaging. We spent one week as a photojournalist team with a charity similar to Doctors Without Borders in Honduras. Our task was to document the American Surgeons lead by award winning Professor Gazi Zibari as they set up infrastructure to teach local surgeons the latest first-world surgical techniques whilst performing pro-bono operations themselves:

WHAT GENRES DO WE SHOOT?

We shoot many genres - everything from portraits of actors and artists to medical missionary work a la Doctors Without Borders.

We strive to create naturalistic cinematic magic in any genre that we are commissioned to shoot.

WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS FOR CLIENT WORKFLOW?

No matter what type of genre we shoot - the process is very similar; it's vital to find out what shots are needed and why .

We will often ask the client to provide samples / reference shots that they love for inspiration.

We then fuse our ideas with the client's ideas and put together a storyboard. Storyboards are used by us for STILL PHOTOGRAPHY and VIDEO WORK to help excite both parties and to make sure that the final result is on point with THE BRAND or the subject's brand.

To give you an example: ACTORS often have agents and managers who need SPECIFIC photos ("headshots") that can portray a SPECIFIC CHARACTER/ROLE TYPE to casting directors and producers. We will:

1. Ask them WHAT role/character type that they want these photos to portray them as AND/OR what their Agent/Manager wants the photos to resemble

2.We ask to see previous work:videos/headshots

3.We then start researching ourselves with and without the actor/agent/manager's input to create a STORYBOARD that helps define WHERE, WHAT AND WHEN we shoot and of course wardrobe.

WHAT IS YOUR SHOOTING STYLE?

We are constantly becoming inspired by other fantastic photographers and film makers. Some of our earliest "heros" of photography were Richard Avedon, Herb Ritts, Bruce Weber, Annie Liebowitz and so on. Whilst it is true that we can tailor the look that a client wants, we prefer to keep our artistic eye and flair.

DO YOU DO YOUR OWN POST PROCESSING, COLOR GRADING AND EDITING?

Yes, we almost always are asked to shoot natural, no artificial lights or set ups and on location. That does not mean however, that we never shoot with our lights, flash or in our studio -- but we certainly prefer our own natural cinematic on location style!

SAMPLE PHOTOGRAPHY REELS

In March of 2014, we set off to the country of Montserrat to start our journey as photojournalists. In the beginning, we were documenting the filming of a documentary about the volcanic eruptions of the 90s...Eight weeks later, my partner Olya and myself had helped a new government get in to power with our photojournalism and embassy work. This reel incorporates this journey until where we are now - LA based photojournalists shooting all over the world many different genres: portraits/ headshots, publicity photos, event work and more.

We love shooting portraits, headshots, editorials and publicity photos and we have taken portraits of politicans, actors and artists and much more. This is a small snippet of our work:our PORTRAITS REEL .

In 2017 we embarked on our first medical photojournalism mission with a team of surgeons from America. This is the video we made on the fly chronically this amazing experience in Honduras for the Doctors Without Borders charity who took us with them - THE AHPBA (Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association).
